Standards of Appearance Policy
The Federation Office has been contacted by a significant number of members with regard to the reviewed Standards of Appearance policy recently published.
The Federation has opposed the Tattoo Section of this policy from the outset. We do not consider it a priority at this time nor have we heard any adverse public comment regarding police officers having tattoos. We do not consider it conducive to having a diverse workforce reflective of the communities we police, a justifiable additional uniform expense or to be practically enforceable by supervisory officers. All these points were forcibly made at each stage of the consultation process. They were however not considered sufficiently strong arguments to change the policy.
If officers wish to make a case to appeal against this section of the policy they should submit a report to the Head of Human Resources in the first instance. If no exemption is granted, members can thereafter contact the Federation Office to discuss their concerns and options.
Any requests for alternative uniform should be made through line managers.
