The program was entertaining and gives viewers a somewhat indication of what and whom the police have to put up with 24/7. It seems that despite how negative or positive the officers appear (on the program) they are scrutinized and vilified by people, who have never been in their position, have not done their job or been in any similar situations and if they were it is unlikely that they would be able to do the job any better. PC Hughes is an outstanding officer who (whether like it or not) highlighted the reality of our society. His comments about shoplifter and drug users are completely justified as it does not take a genius to realise what a bad impact that such criminals cause to their victims. PC Hughes comments about talking to such individuals about where they went wrong in life and pointing them in right direction to be put them on an acceptable path of life is also justified. Police officers join the service to patrol, identify suspects, investigate crimes; aid victims of crime protect the public and refer ‘certain individuals’ to the social work department. Police officers are NOT social workers!!!! Only those individuals (the criminals) can make changes to their own lives/take a different path but to be honest the higher proportion do not/cannot be bothered and expect the working class to pick up the pieces and pay for their room and board and accept their criminal behaviour. Even if PC Hughes comes across as a 70's to 80's police officer then even better. People had more respect for the police back then. Nowadays people even as young as ten years old have no hesitation of assaulting police officers or telling them to f***k off when they are only doing their job.
As for PC Hughes relationship with his probationer...he is ensuring that the recruits meet the reality of the job at an early stage. It is not a case of whether or not he likes him; he is there to ensure that he is doing the job properly and realistically. His probationer seems a good lad but was over confident and that confidence did not balance out with his ability. Probationers need to learn from an early stage in their career that the social worker approach is not always the best outcome to any situation. Sometime they need to be able to distinguish the difference of when an arrest needs to be made or wasting time trying to lecture a drunk male that he is acting out of order.
Finally as for one of the officers taking about ‘going on the piss’...he was asked if he goes out on the piss and he said yes. 9 out of 10 police officers would say the same after all they are human too and have a life out of the job and that is not a disciplinary offence.

I found the programme most intersting . It gave me as a member of the public good insight to what the job of the modern day police officer has to deal with . I think all officers did well and showed they are infact human .The recruits did very well .I did however find myself a bit drawn to agree with PC Willie Hughes of Perth up until he called people shite for the want of a better word , then his last statement where he was sarcastic about talking to drug users and shoplifters and the likes about where they were going wrong in life and how they were to point them in the right direction to be put on an acceptable path of life .PC Hughes strikes me as your 70/80's trained beat bobby and he seems stuck there and unwilling to accept the changes in our society and the problems within it as a whole .I would hope PC Hughes can move with the times and accept the job has changed along with society and Police our streets accordingly . Perhaps a refresher course is available ? . He will never go beyond the rank of PC with this dreary attitude . Having said that my opinions tend to sway with his point of view as he appears to have been a policeman for a long time and has undoubtedly seen it all and heard it all .Its difficult to decide whether his comments and attitude to the public and his role from a Policemans point of view are indeed justified .Thats a matter for our more Senior Officers to decide .

Both the majority of the new recruits and their tutors were an embarrassment to Tayside and police forces in general. The only person who I thought showed any genuine ability to engage with people, understand reality and uphold the law was in fact the officer who failed his exams. (I think partly due to the fact his tutor didn’t like him.) The actions and attitudes of the officers had they been in any other role within society would be facing disciplinary action. Can you imagine nurses, social workers, doctors etc being allowed to discuss on camera while representing their profession, talk about going on the piss etc. If Tayside Police think this is a positive spin on their policing style, then God help us all.
