TRAVEL INSURANCE INFORMATION - VOLCANIC ASH
16-04-2010 The following is a quote from our insurance broker, Philip Williams and Co. in relation to cover provided to Tayside Police officers by their travel insurance company.\\\"The current stance of all of our insurers (and other insurers that we do not deal with) is that the situation with the volcanic ash is an uninsured event. We obviously are not happy with this stance, but it seems the entire insurance industry has got together and debated this scenario. I feel that initially the insurance industry is so scared of the potential impact that they are all saying in unison that the event is not covered. The best advice to give is firstly to act as if uninsured. Then contact tour operators, travel agents or airlines for their assistance. Certainly travel agents and tour operators are being very good and arranging for accommodation and costs for people stuck abroad. They will also provide full refunds or make arrangements for travel at a later date. The problems arise mainly for people who have booked independently with no agent or operator. Flight costs will be refunded, but there are no guarantees that accommodation will be. Medical costs for members stranded abroad will continue to be covered even if the delay takes an individual over the trip limit.\\\" Back to News Archive page |
